Always begin with a wet dream...
Every New Angel episode starts with Keisuke's wet dreams.
Needless to say, it is obvious how his subconscious is screaming
for him to get laid. The next thing you'll notice is that
the characters wear so many school uniforms, I can't tell
if they're in college or in high school or were previously
in high school and then the story progressed until college.
Does that sound a little confusing?
I like the girl Shizuka. She's no sissy, but she's no bully
either. She's a gentle intelligent girl who has a soft heart
for people in need. Watch out when she gets provoked, though,
'cause that's when she unleashes a veritable dragon. Keisuke,
on the other hand, is the main wimpy protagonist whose personality
has only one facet: that of your regular ecchi guy who's mental
faculty lies beneath his shorts. He is such a forgettable
person that sometimes Shizuka seems to steal the show away
from him, making me swear she is the "New Angel"
that the title was referring to. That Keisuke looks like every
other lead guy in every other h-anime doesn't help him any.
It's also irritating how he comes up with the strangest solutions
to his friends' problems and then ends up making a mess anyway.
Despite such a weak character, I found New Angel really funny
and creatively executed. This time, however, there were some
scenes that almost made me weep, especially when Shizuka painfully
asserted herself in the face of great temptation. I was certainly
thrown off-guard. It's no less than what you can expect from
U-jin, of course. What I found a bit strange is that the sex
scenes from volume 2 onwards are a bit more detailed than
your usual U-jin fare. Though still not as graphic as most
newer hentai titles are, I think New Angel has a fighting
chance, especially for those who are more into traditional
h-scenes. I guess this is good news for U-jin fans who are
looking for more, uh, excitement.
