When somebody plays God...
I'm starting with a word of warning: Do not buy the condensed
version (all-volumes-in-one) of Tournament of the Gods.
Tournament of the Gods has a very good theme, and it will all
go to waste if even a single element of it gets deleted, which
was the case with the Title Match edition. With the TM Ed, they
didn't just skip important details in between episodes; they actually
deleted many plot-defining events in the main chapters! Suddenly
there were strange characters appearing, disappearing, and just
brutally getting killed off. I just got so totally lost that there
was nothing else to do but fall asleep.
Some of the scenes can be downright violentbut of
course in the TM Ed they had already cut most of the gory
parts offor maybe I just think they were too violent
because I don't like seeing cute little Pikachu-like entities
get bloody. I like the artwork, though, and the animation
isn't bad either. The sex could do with a little more detail,
though they certainly have plenty of it. The story, on the
other hand, has many mini-adventures that are worth noting.
Our heroes (a male and his female partner) join a competition
of strength and skill, all the while bumping into people and
other supernatural beings that they help along the way. Sometimes,
it's one tragic story after another: creatures hunted for
their status symbols; a "disease" that controls
sexual urges; accidental heroes etc. The end goal would of
course be that one of them becomes the ultimate fighting champion.
Overall, the only thing that irks me is the fact that I think
the tournament rules are totally oppressive to the female
gender and should be abolished, considering the mastermind
of the competition is a woman.
